NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course
Learn the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely.
Why should I take NRA Basic Pistol?
The NRA Basic Pistol class is the best introductory class available for the beginning or novice shooter. It is also highly recommended as a periodic refresher class for the experienced gun owner.
The NRA Basic Pistol class is universally accepted by New York counties as satisfaction of their training requirements. It is the required course of training to obtain a pistol license in Putnam and Westchester counties, as well as the Connecticut Permit to Carry Pistols and Revolvers.
The classroom portion is approximately 5 hours long (depending upon the size of the class). The curriculim includes:
- NRA’s rules for safe gun handling
- pistol parts and operation
- shooting fundamentals
- range rules
- cleaning the pistol
- continued opportunities for skill development
- NRA Basic Pistol written examination
Students may schedule live-fire sessions with our instructors once they obtain their NYS Pistol License. Students who already have their license and require a live-fire session may schedule one with our instructors at any time. There is no additional charge for the live-fire session; students pay only for their range time and ammunition.
All students receive the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, an NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, a Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and a course completion certificate.
